For the Love of the Job

Love is in the air this month and those positive feelings extend to the workplace for many Canadians. A new survey shows that half (53 per cent) of working Canadians love their current jobs. But nearly six in ten (58 per cent) cite better compensation and benefits as a means to increase the affection for their job. Better work/life balance and more opportunities to learn/develop rounded out the top three attraction drivers that Canadians were looking for in a potential employer. Some findings from the survey by Workopolis:

  • Reasons to stay: 16 per cent of Canadians continue to stay in their current position because it pays the bills, while 14 per cent are afraid to make a change
  • The older you get the more you love your job: Canadians aged 35-44 are more likely to love their job than those aged 25-34.
  • The laws of attraction: Quebeckers have the strongest feelings about compensation and benefits, while those in the Prairies would prefer a better work/life balance.

More Than One-Third of Workers Have Dated a Co-Worker

Posted by: mrfindmore

Economy up, economy down, one thing remains the same: love is in the air at the office. More than one-third (35 per cent) of workers said they have dated a co-worker at some time during their careers, in line with 34 per cent who said the same in both 2009 and 2008. Additionally, 29 per cent said they went on to marry the person they dated at work. This is according to CareerBuilder Canada's annual office romance survey of more than 700 workers.

Some workers are dating those above them on the office ladder. When it comes to dating higher ups, women were more likely than men to date someone above them in their company's hierarchy. Forty per cent of women said they have dated someone who holds a higher position in their organization; 12 per cent of men report they have done the same.

The January RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook Index dipped two points to 106, as consumers delayed major purchases, were less positive about their outlook for the Canadian economy and showed increased job anxiety. According to the survey, almost six in ten Canadians (58 per cent) are concerned about their current level of debt. However, fewer Canadians in the over 55 age group expressed concern (45 per cent), likely because fewer of them are still carrying debt.

When asked at what age they expect to be or became debt free, the average Canadian said 57, with interesting differences between age groups:

Drivers caught chatting, dialing or texting while behind the wheel will now be slapped with a fine of up to $500. The distracted driving law came into effect three months ago and the grace period is over.

Today, police will begin handing out tickets to those violating the law. The only exception to the ban is a 9-1-1 call.

Meanwhile, hands-free cell phones are legal and global positioning systems are allowed only if they are attached to the dashboard and the destination is keyed in before driving.

Commuters Saved over $5 million in 2009 by Carpooling

Smart Commute, who operates carpoolzone.ca, a ride-matching website, has designated February 1-5, 2010 as Carpool Week. During Carpool Week, Smart Commute is encouraging drivers to visit carpoolzone.ca to see how much their daily commute costs in dollars and pollution and register for the service to find a carpool match.

The website matches commuters with similar schedules and routes from home to work to share a ride. Almost 23,000 commuters in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) have saved over $5 million in 2009 by carpooling.

In addition to cost savings associated with owning, driving and maintaining a car, carpoolers reap other rewards such as reduced stress, less impact on the environment, and possibly a preferential parking spot at work.
